Bridges of Leeds

A self-guided city centre audio trail with puzzles to solve. Find the codes to unlock the stories of our city’s waterways

Have you ever noticed that we’re surrounded by words, letters and numbers? They’re painted on signs, cast in metalwork and carved in stone. What if they were passwords that could unlock stories from our past?

Bridges of Leeds is a self-guided city centre audio trail, originally created for, with funding from Leeds Civic Trust.

Each of the 12 bridges on the trail has its own audio story. But it’s a trail with a twist: every story requires a code to unlock it.

Follow the simple steps below to solve the puzzles and unlock stories of Leeds’ historic waterways.

Get a map and go

Download or view the Bridges of Leeds audio trail map here or use the one on this page.

Unlock and listen to the stories

The audio story for each bridge can be unlocked with a code, which you can find near to the bridge using its clue below.

No additional signs have been installed for this trail. The codes you need already exist on signage and street furniture or are the solution to an observational puzzle.

  • When at a bridge location, expand the corresponding box below and carefully read the clue. The answer can be found nearby
  • Once you know the answer, this is the code you will need to unlock the audio story. Click the ‘Enter Code‘ button in the same box and enter it into the password field
  • You can also write it on your map in case you need to listen to the story later
  • Codes/passwords only use numbers and letters (no special characters), contain no spaces and are lowercase only
